Channel Islands, Spring 2026

The Commodore’s Compass

Hello friends,

I hope you all have been getting out on the water between wind and rain events. It's been warm and green out at the islands with our plentiful rain this year. Spring wind and grey skies are just around the corner. Get on out there.

As reported out by me last month on our taking on new members from HIYC, that merger has hit a few snags. Stay tuned for more information after our board meeting on the 12th. I apologize for the confusion. Things like this take much consideration.

We had a great night for our Mardi Gras Commodores Ball last month. There was a great band, nice winery with good food and dancing.  At our last months general meeting Angie cooked up a memorable dinner of her Grandma's meatloaf ,potatoes, and vegies for a nice crowd of hungry sailors. You can support AYC by eating at the club. Hope to see you all for dinner in March,

Our St Patrick's Day Race is coming up on Saturday March 14th. Regina will be cooking up corn beef ,cabbage, and all the fixings while we are racing. Sailing instructions and NOR are posted on our web site. Lets get our Irish going and start our racing season together following up with a fine dinner.

Other events in March: the AYC monthly Open Mic is Sunday the 22nd, 4 to 7. Grub and Grog served with some fine music. Our General Meeting is March 28th., so mark your calendars.  Who will be serving dinner? Please volunteer as soon as possible. Thank you.

Thank you for all the Membership Renewals! If you’ve not paid yet please contact the club treasurer at your earliest convenience. We are still taking payment for 2026 dues at the bar. Please get your dues in and get your marina neighbors to join up. See you all on the water.

START OF THE SEASON FOR SAILING AND RACING

Open Mic, a good time!

The Vice Commodore’s Comment

Sailing and racing have been part of our world for generations — and what endures isn't just the competition or the craft, but the people we meet and the challenges we face together. There's nothing quite like sharing a moment on the water or swapping stories with a fellow sailor.

And here's something I've come to know to be true: every sailor has something to teach you. No matter how many miles you have under your keel, always listen. You'll be a better sailor for it.

I'll be heading to the other side of the world for the next few months, but before I go, I want to leave you with this: get your boats off the dock. Come to the club. You are part of a great legacy of sailors, and that's something worth celebrating — every time you set sail.

See you on the water,
Pete Turpel
Vice Commodore

Rear Commodore’s News

Hello fellow AYC members!

Race season is fast approaching and we need community support. If any of you are

associated with businesses and other community people that would like to contribute

funds or items to the club please get them involved. The hats, T-shirts, drinking cups,

and other items that promote their businesses are great. We recently received a Dog

Basket Gift for promoting a dog grooming business. Let’s be creative! Also, anyone that

would like to lend a hand getting the Committee boat ready is welcome. The board will

set a date for a clean up day at Piper. Thanks, Lorenz

Reminder: A.Y.C. Wet Wednesday racers must have current PHRF certification to

officially place and be considered for end of year recognition. Boats without current

PHRF Certs. are encouraged to race and will be given a provisional rating by AYC Race

Committee.

See you at the start line !

Whatever it is, the way you treat your best friend can make all the difference.

A TRIBUTE TO JANE THOMAS

We'll always remember Jane Thomas, a gifted racer and a tireless champion for women in sailing. Her passion for the sport lifted our whole community, and the waves she made for women on the racecourse will be felt for years to come. We're so grateful our paths crossed, and proud that her spirit touched Anacapa Yacht Club as much as it did.

Remembering Jane Thomas as someone who truly gave back to this sport.

Her support of racing made a real difference — for Anacapa Yacht Club and for the sailors she encouraged along the way.

Chubasco, an AYC member boat was lucky to share “Lady at the Helm” with her. Fair winds, Jane.
